Scientists Brace for Media Storm Around Controversial
Flu Studies

ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS—Locked up in the bowels of the medical faculty building here and accessible to only a handful of scientists lies a man-made flu virus that could change world history if it were ever set free.

The virus is an H5N1 avian influenza strain that has been genetically altered and is now easily transmissible between ferrets, the animals that most closely mimic the human response to flu. Scientists believe it’s likely that the pathogen, if it emerged in nature or were released, would trigger an influenza pandemic, quite possibly with many millions of deaths.

In a 17th floor office in the same building, virologist Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center calmly explains why his team created what he says is “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make”—and why he wants to publish a paper describing how they did it. Fouchier is also bracing for a media storm. After he talked to ScienceInsider yesterday, he had an appointment with an institutional press officer to chart a communication strategy.

Fouchier’s paper is one of two studies that have triggered an intense debate about the limits of scientific freedom and that could portend changes in the way U.S. researchers handle so-called dual-use research: studies that have a potential public health benefit but could also be useful for nefarious purposes like biowarfare or bioterrorism. Patrice O’Neal R.I.P

It’s not often that I (of few emotions or sympathies) am upset at the passing of a public figure; however I feel an overwhelming sadness at  the loss of one of the world’s most  intelligent, funny and underrated men to have lived in my lifetime: Patrice O’Neal.
In October O’Neal suffered a stroke that the complications of which  led to his death this morning. The Statement below was posted on his website.

It is with terrible sadness we must report that Patrice O’Neal has passed away this morning at 7:00am due to the complications of the stroke he suffered on October 19. Many of us have lost a close and loved friend; all of us have lost a true comic genius. His mother, who was also his best friend, was at his side. Patrice is survived by his wife, Vondecarlo; his step daughter Aymilyon, sister Zinder, and his mother Georgia. The family wishes to thank all of the fans and friends who have expressed an outpouring of love and support for Patrice these past weeks. We ask that you please respect the family’s request for privacy at this difficult time. Thank you.

O’Neal was one of my favorite comics, and for those of you who never got to experience him while he was alive I suggest you immediately pick up his DVD Elephant in the Room. Few men have ever or will ever see and translate society, and human nature as clearly and simply as Patrice O’Neal did. His loss leaves us still naive, but so much more intelligent  for the fact that he lived. Rest in Peace Patrice, you will be missed by all.

Cyber Monday….the day your boss loathes for the loss of productivity. People the country over abandon their job descriptions in the hunt for online deals to complete their holiday shopping quotas. Well for those of you like myself who are broke and to which Cyber Monday means Jack Shit, here is a new suggestion: Watch a cheesy Cyberpunk movie and relax. This Years suggestion is the cheesiest of the cheesy! Johnny Mnemonic. All I have to Say is  “Ralphie…watch the movie Ralphie. Its good.. i think you’ll enjoy it Ralphie!” If you have no idea what I’m Talking about ….watch the first ten minutes of this Gouda parade and you will. Happy Cyber Monday

Joined the robotics team and received my first silver metal. Started modeling when I was 15 for Extreme Talent, didn’t go far. Soon after that Ive started my job in customer service! [REPOST FOR BLU RAY RELEASE TODAY]

For the past six months since the first images of Jason Mamoa hit the interwebs, I have done nothing but bitch and complain about how they were ruining the Conan Movies. Expectations were lowered when first reviews were lackluster and mostly negative, however…..
I REALLY liked the new Conan Flick.

Jason Mamoa is in fact AWESOME as Conan…I was incredibly wrong. Maybe it was just my experience with first seeing him as Khal Drogo in game of thrones but he really has this barbarian thing down. Also Awesome is Stephen Lang (you may recognize him as the enemy marine in Avatar) as Khalar Zym. One would never guess this guy is 60 years old. I am positive that even though this movie is looking to barely break even, Mamoa is the action hero we’ve been waiting for since the expendables became geriatrics. (more…)

UNRATED EDITION: Now with 12.2 OUTRAGEOUS extra seconds!!!

OK this is a marketing technique that just needs to die. EVERY F#@!ng comedy that comes out for home consumption now comes out as the CRRRRRAAAazzzZZZY Unrated version. Is anyone really dumb enough not to have learned that all Unrated means is that there is one scene in the movie that had a slightly longer cut or alternate take that was put back into the film before media release. Usually that extra OUTRAGEOUS unrated material lasts about 5 seconds, and in half of these so-called extended versions you can’t tell the difference between it and the theatrical cut.

There should be a rule that states that only films that replace 10 or more minutes of unreleased material to the run-time can be advertised as a new version. Replacing one well placed “FUCK” should not change the rating….especially of a film like The Hangover or Hot Tub Time Machine. Hell the parts they put back into The Hangover should have stayed out of the movie for good reason….THEY SERVE NO PURPOSE IN THE FLOW OF THE FILM. Another example is Dumb and Dumber…the additions actually make the movie LESS amusing! (more…)
