Time for the first annual SKULLIE awards folks!! This is an extremely nerdy undertaking and you will choose the winners. I tried to come up with a few more random categories than your average Awards nomination and not all of you will even know what to choose. If you have a suggestion that isn’t in the choices…I don’t care. If you feel you must make your unlisted choice known you can put it in the comments section….doesn’t mean I’ll listen.

Anyhow, Go Ahead and put in your two cents for who you’d like for Best FPS of 2010, Most Disapointing TV Series of 2010, Worst Comic Book Movie Decision of 2010 and more. Continue on to fill out your ballot!

Last year I (as did every one else) purchased the best selling shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and began the frustrating road to online domination. I couldn’t believe how good the game play was and how addictive the multiplayer became. After a time (as with most games) the levels became tiresome and the hackers insufferable and I fell out of playing.

In June of this year Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released and I basically ignored it regardless of how many times Pauly suggested I get it. I generally had no interest and had the miscalculated idea that Battlefield was just a funnier HALO-ish version of COD. I attest this to poor marketing as the commercials for both the original battlefield and this incarnation seemed to focus on goofy antics. I do admit I was wrong.

Battlefield: BC2 is far superior to CODMW2 in every way, from the completely destructible environments to the soldier classes, the map layouts and usable assault vehicles. I can’t quite describe the feel of the game as it is similar to COD but just somehow better…more immersive. You’re actually able to sneak around and flank people. It’s not so much a “run around at full speed, knife someone and run away” game like COD. Also you have the option in multiplayer to put your friends in squads and work together utilizing each others strengths to accomplish missions, pilot tanks and fly Apache helicopters. (more…)

Monday Night Combat

Did you ever wonder what would happen if you accidentally dropped all your favorite classic games into a blender, and they somehow created a cohesive blob of awesomeness? Well someone did exactly that for X-box live with Monday Night Combat, which combines aspects of Team Fortress, Smash TV, Unreal Tournament, Mega Man, and a turret defense game.

You can choose one of six classes that each have upgradeable abilities, and you and your team must defend your base, all the while trying to destroy your enemy’s base. Most certainly not a new concept, and it does take a lot from Team fortress  but it is an old idea done extremely well. Oh and did i mention that your major power up is BACON. Just like in real life….Bacon makes you do everything better.

Monday Night Combat is a great game and a hell of a lot of fun, but it does have a drawback. I’m 30 years old and most of my friends don’t own an X-box ,so if I want to go all Goldeneye on their asses they have to come to me. This usually isn’t a problem except M.N.C’s only local multi-player option is a two player split screen. A game of this caliber needs to have local 4 player support to be fully enjoyed, as it just begs for face to face taunting…..its just not the same over a crackly microphone. That being said, Online multi-player is a brutal 6 on 6 death-match that is completely addicting and  is most enjoyed when played with friends.  Continue on ahead to to see video (more…)

A few months back, I posted a rave review of the X-box Live game Zombie Apocalypse and now STEAM has released their answer to Z.A with Nation Red. Nation Red is an ultra fast infinite play arena-based shooter providing an exceptional close-quarter battlefield experience. Fight thousands of zombie mutants and their bosses in frantic bloody gameplay while earning over 70 perks. From the looks of it Nation Red looks like an epic combination of Left 4 Dead gameplay in a Zombie apocalypse format.

August 17, 1977
Scattered groups of zombies infiltrate remote Midwestern towns. Incapable of using tools or weapons, the invaders are resisted until they retreat back into the desert. Special elimination posses are set up to hunt down any of the surviving undead. Six weeks after the squads started their search-and-destroy mission, the last known zombie was shot and killed.

Present-day
Over thirty years had passed when a truck driver traveling down a desolate Arizona road plows into a wall of undead. Before the driver’s phone signal went dead, he reported some were carrying guns… They’re back and now they are hunting us. Continue reading for the Video Preview.

Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative and gameplay experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky.

Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

BioShock Infinite is currently looking to be released sometime in 2012.

Batman: Arkham City builds upon the intense, atmospheric foundation of Batman: Arkham Asylum, sending players soaring into Arkham City, the new maximum security “home” for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds. Set inside the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City, this highly anticipated sequel introduces a brand-new story that draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight.

Batman is expected to be released in the fall of 2011….DAMN IT…now i have to go home and play the original.

At the forefront of the Geek wet dream fad is a little lady named Olivia Munn. Understandably any less than confident nerd who’s into role playing, comics and video games is infatuated with this beauty, as she is stunningly attractive with a killer body and is supposedly into geeky things. Sure one doesn’t have to be that smart to understand that this pretty face is  just a marketing scheme gone viral. If over the years of working for g4 as eye candy she has obtained a healthy love for geeky hobbies, more power to her. I used to be just as enamored with her as every other nerd until she began to have causes. (more…)

Silent Hill is one of my all time favorite series in video game history. Relying more on mood, sound, story, and disturbing images than jump scares, the Silent Hill series epitomizes horror in the modern era. In the last 2 years 2 major installments of the series have dropped, the lackluster Silent Hill 5 and the game changing Silent Hill:Shattered Memories.

Silent Hill 6 (working title silent hill 8 [counting shattered memories and origins]) follows in the footsteps of Silent Hill 5 and will debut on Xbox 360 and PS3, but will hopefully be more successful of a story than an homage to Jacobs Ladder. In addition, this will be the first installment that the iconic music and sound design will not be produced by Akira Yamaoaka, and will instead be created by Dexter Composer Daniel Licht. Licht has some monstrous footsteps to follow in, lets hope he can live up to expectations.

No word on the release date, but continue on to see the E3 trailer for the hotly anticipated game. (more…)

All right….being that I am possibly the last person to play this game as it came out almost a year ago, my review would be pretty useless. However since you can now buy it for $14 at Gamestop I am still going to put down my feelings here for those who may not have picked it up yet.

Resident Evil 4 took the series in a new direction with an over the shoulder P.O.V, and a new plague to destroy. The zombies were now gone and the enemy took a particularly Lovecraftian form as humanity became host to a new form of parasite called Los Plagas. The game was a success in keeping the creepy mood, the dank rustic environments and droning enemies. Resident Evil 5 continues the story of Los Plagas infection with the same game play, but looses a lot of what made resident evil a great game. (more…)
