That right….30 Helens agree that Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny deserves another chance! Jack Black can really annoy me, and the beginning of the downward spiral that is his career can be traced to this movie, but it is ironically one of his best. Released in 2006 after a huge marketing campaign and an impressive list of cameos signed on,T.D. P.O.D was expected to be a blockbuster hit, but bombed mercilessly.
Tenacious D and the P.O.D. is a comedic rock opera retelling the not so epic origin of the comedic duo Kyle Gass and Jack Black. They take their meager rise to comedy rock stardom and create an epic tale of Metal adventure that is entertaining and fun. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no Oscar contender but it’s extremely entertaining, and definitely good for a few laughs.
In the process of trying to write the greatest rock album of all time the duo comes across the legend of the pick of destiny from a roadied out Ben Stiller. The pick has given every great rock god his powers of Metal through out the modern age; it is formed from the tooth of the devil and bestows amazing talent upon its owner. The quest to retrieve it from the rock and roll hall of fame and use it in a battle of the bands is entirely ridiculous but is comedy genius.
This is a great movie that is really funny; unfortunately it sparked the first backlash of Jack Black’s overexposed career and fell flat at the box office. This honestly should have been the hit it was advertised as, but like Kevin Smiths Jersey Girl it was hurt by other projects Black was involved in at the time. Its amazing how fickle Hollywood can kill a career by simply utilizing an actor too much and offsetting the balance of fan love and fan disgust. This is good news for you though, because you can buy the DVD online for cheaper than it would cost to rent it. Buy it and you won’t be disappointed; I mean how often do you get to see Jack Black as a baby Bigfoot flying through a sky of rainbows only to land in a river of ice cream?
