Few movies or television shows capture what its like to be a kid, and even fewer do it well enough to be enjoyed by adults. The Sandlot holds the title when it comes to movies , but the television show that I look to, to remind me of the trials, tribulations and fun of childhood is Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

Pete and Pete is filled with strange, quirky comedy that would make the Kids in the Hall proud, and is cast with numerous supporting stars including: Steve Buscemi, Michelle Trachtenberg, Janine Garafalo, Michael Stipe, William Hickey, LL cool J, Selma Blair and Iggy Pop! The Series follows the exploits of The Brothers Pete and their navigation through childhood with the help of their eccentric friends and neighbors (including their own personal super hero Artie:the strongest man in the world). There is something vaguely familiar and yet magical in the series and it reminds one what it is like to live life without cynicism in a world where anything is possible.

What’s best about Pete and Pete is that it is as enjoyable to watch now as it was in the 90′s. It was made in the time before 9 year olds became “tweens” and started being catered to like alcoholic twenty year olds…im looking at you Disney channel! Pete and Pete took people at face value; kids were kids and dealt with relatable issues that didn’t involve touring with their band or running their own company. One thing I noticed is that the more “adult” they try to make kids shows now, the less appealing they are to adults. You couldn’t PAY me to sit and watch Wizards of Waverly place, Hannah Montana,  ICarley, or Camp Rock, but I guarantee I could sit down with my parents, and some random kids  and everyone involved would find something to enjoy with the Petes.

If you remember The Adventures of Pete and Pete, go get seasons 1 and 2 from Netflix or your local video store. If you’ve never seen Pete and Pete and are fans of Kids in the Hall or Monty Python, give the Petes a chance. It is a kid’s show, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining. Sadly due to low demand the third season was never put out on DVD, but if there is a surge in purchases for the first two season maybe it will eventually be released to Blu Ray.
