Last year I (as did every one else) purchased the best selling shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and began the frustrating road to online domination. I couldn’t believe how good the game play was and how addictive the multiplayer became. After a time (as with most games) the levels became tiresome and the hackers insufferable and I fell out of playing.

In June of this year Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released and I basically ignored it regardless of how many times Pauly suggested I get it. I generally had no interest and had the miscalculated idea that Battlefield was just a funnier HALO-ish version of COD. I attest this to poor marketing as the commercials for both the original battlefield and this incarnation seemed to focus on goofy antics. I do admit I was wrong.

Battlefield: BC2 is far superior to CODMW2 in every way, from the completely destructible environments to the soldier classes, the map layouts and usable assault vehicles. I can’t quite describe the feel of the game as it is similar to COD but just somehow better…more immersive. You’re actually able to sneak around and flank people. It’s not so much a “run around at full speed, knife someone and run away” game like COD. Also you have the option in multiplayer to put your friends in squads and work together utilizing each others strengths to accomplish missions, pilot tanks and fly Apache helicopters. (more…)

All right….being that I am possibly the last person to play this game as it came out almost a year ago, my review would be pretty useless. However since you can now buy it for $14 at Gamestop I am still going to put down my feelings here for those who may not have picked it up yet.

Resident Evil 4 took the series in a new direction with an over the shoulder P.O.V, and a new plague to destroy. The zombies were now gone and the enemy took a particularly Lovecraftian form as humanity became host to a new form of parasite called Los Plagas. The game was a success in keeping the creepy mood, the dank rustic environments and droning enemies. Resident Evil 5 continues the story of Los Plagas infection with the same game play, but looses a lot of what made resident evil a great game. (more…)

Sevendust: Cold Day Memory

Sevendust recently released their 8th major studio release Cold Day Memory and it is (in my opinion) their best album. It’s nice to see some hard and heavy metal on the billboard charts without the pop punk vocals of bands like Bullet for my Valentine. (don’t get me wrong, musically bullet rocks but their vocals and lyrics are a little…..emo.)

From start to finish every track is hard hitting, well written and mixed flawlessly. If you are a Metal head like me, go pick this one up. By pick it up I mean buy it, don’t pirate it asses! It’s rare that a full album is worth listening the whole way through but this one most certainly is, and if it doesn’t warrant you spending some cash on the whole album I don’t know what does.

Let’s try to keep this one in the public eye to reward artists that put out quality products, and not an album with 2 singles and a butt load of filler.  Cold Day Memory gets the SkullBunnie Metal Honors Seal, which means not only is it SkullBunnie approved, but if you don’t like it the Metal Gods will strike you down where you stand!

The Lovely Bones is Peter Jackson’s latest opus, which features an all star cast, including Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Susan Sarandon. The Movie follows a family that must cope after one of the children (Susie Salmon) is murdered on her way home from school. The unique narrative is seen partially from the point of view of the dead 13 year old as she watches her family grieve while trying to make sense of her disappearance.

Stuck in the “In-between” Susie Salmon exists in a world that seems to be made up of the memories of her extinguished life. Giant model ships inside of bottles float on massive oceans, seasons shift from one mile to the next, and the state of her world appears to be linked to her emotional state. Also eternally linked to her emotions, her father (Mark Wahlberg) seems to be swayed by Susie’s emotional queues, as he steadfastly hunts for clues to her murder. (more…)

After all the hype and viral advertising about Paranormal Activity, I had the chance to sit down and watch it, as I didn’t see it in the theater. Honestly I say thank god I didn’t see it in the theater, BUT WAIT! That is a good thing.  I came home from work last night and sat alone on the couch and started it up. What followed was one of the most engrossing voyeuristic spine chilling ghost movies I’ve ever seen.

Paranormal Activity is a faux-reality camcorder movie in the vain of Blair Witch Project, Quarantine and REC, but done very realistically. A young couple plan to document the strange happenings that seem to be occurring around the young woman. With only the knowledge they seem to have picked up from watching ghost hunter TV shows, they set up a microphone and video tape all aspects of their lives. They also call in a psychic who warns them not to pursue the entity within their house or things will get worse. Needless to say things get worse. (more…)

Since the hallowed day that I discovered that I was a metal head, I have always been a fan of White/Rob Zombie. Everything about him just made me want to hang out with the dude; from his love of all things horror, to his skills as a graphic artist, and his versatility in music. More recently I have enjoyed watching his gradual move to film-making though critically he’s had his ups and downs (personally I thought Halloween 2 was pretty good even though most thought it was crap). Pandorum Review

Pandorum is the new (to video) sci-fi horror flick from producer and writer Paul W.S Anderson. This is the man who consistently makes a thoroughly entertaining movie followed immediately by a crap fest; This movie falls somewhere in between. The Netflix teaser summary goes like this:

Upon rousing themselves from hyper-sleep, Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Bower (Ben Foster), a pair of crewmen assigned to work on a spacecraft, discover startling gaps in their collective memory — including who they are and what, exactly, their mission was in the first place. The plot thickens when they realize they’re not the only ones on board the ship.

I don’t think I can look at this as  a single movie as it seems to have bits and pieces of  three : a really great sci-fi movie, a bad horror movie, and a shitty Sy-Fy channel movie. Lets Begin with … (more…)

Cage the Elephant: Best new Band of 2009

CAGE THE ELEPHANT

In my opinion, the best new rising band of the year was a little Kentucky band who comes to us via Britain. Cage the Elephant is the perfect mix of dirty blues, rock, rhythm and lyric, think jet meets the white stripes.  I highly recommend you check them out as you will be hearing a lot from them in the coming year. Evidence of this is  their breakout song “Ain’t no rest for the wicked” is now featured in a couple commercials as well as the new game Borderlands. Click the link below for a sample.

Ai’nt no rest for the wicked

The Cult series Silent Hill is back one year after the lackluster installment of silent hill 5, with Silent Hill Shattered memories on the WII. Don’t get me wrong i love the whole series, however the games have become somewhat stale and almost a parody of themselves . Always a lone character lost in a strikingly similar town (albeit different locations throughout) fighting off similar enemies with similar weapons, with little effort to actually progress the mythos of the silent hill saga. Also since i have yet to play a game I,ve felt was worth buying on the Wii I was somewhat reluctant that shattered memories was exclusive to Nintendo. I doubt no more.
Silent Hill:Shattered Memories breaks the mold and has actually surpassed Silent Hill 2:Restless Dreams as my favorite in the series. This game is the most immersive I have EVER played and (more…)
