To sum up what I’ve missed this week
Posted: 27th January 2011 by Jon in COMICS/Books, GAMEs, MOVIEs, MUSIC, NEWS, TV/WEBTags: johnny storm dead, new sony PSP, new thundercats, Razzies, Wizard magazine
As it turns out this week has been chock full o’ work and after numerous 14 hour days I have had no time to cover all of the news pouring out. So I write to you from an undisclosed location in the future where I am able to at least sum up the busy week in the news. No really it’s true; I have transmitted my thoughts through this futuristic temporal thought transmitter. So here it goes:
First and foremost the Oscar nominations were released and I just managed to get them posted. Unfortunately I did not find the time to analyze and post my thoughts on them… (This being the future they have now been completed, but you won’t see them for at least another day). The only thing I can say about them right now is that Nolan was robbed once again not being nominated for best director.
The Return of Sophisticated Hip Hop
Posted: 13th January 2011 by Jon in MUSICTags: Apollo Kids, Ghostface Killah, hip hop, review, WuTang Clan
It’s a sad state of affairs for music when Lil Wayne is considered among the tops in hip hop, and innovative artists like Ghostface Killah see no airplay whatsoever. Released this past December Ghostface Killah’s 9th studio album APOLLO KIDS, blends aspects of 70′s soul, early hip hop and funk. The vocals flow with his stream-of-consciousness narratives and become part of the production so that even without the context, the words become a percussion instrument of their own adding to the complex rhythms and beats that make up the final piece.
It’s nice to have groups like The Roots, as well as solo artists like Ghostface Killah that have kept sophistication in Hip Hop, and I look forward to the day when the ignorant pop garbage that coats the radio waves fades away. There was a time when Rap and Hip Hop were used to actually say something and not brag or rehash trite themes over and over again. Entertainment Weekly‘s Simon Vozick-Levinson viewed it as a timeless addition to Ghostface’s catalogue and complimented its “jittery pulp fiction and zany free-associative zingers over scratchy soul, funk, and rock samples”. ARTISTdirect’s Rick Florino gave the album five out of five stars and wrote that Ghostface “squeezes out some of the most engaging, enthralling, and epic raps that New York City has ever produced” (more…)
USPS Media Mail: When it absolutely has to be there sometime in the next month or two!
Posted: 16th December 2010 by Jon in COMICS/Books, GAMEs, MOVIEs, MUSIC, NEWSTags: Media Mail, Slow, Takes forever, Terrible, USPS
The pony express is still riding across this grand country, carrying your cds, books, and movies. Now re-branded as the United States Media Mail Service, the nations elderly man these posts atop horses rejected from local veterinary colleges countrywide. At the lightning fast pace of 6.3 kilometers an hour these geriatric cowboys traverse the country side driven often by senile dementia and hallucinations of attacking snail people. Taking every precaution to keep your beloved packages safe, delivery may take a day or twelve more than quoted to make sure that your products reach you mostly undamaged and at times in the original packaging. Our riders can on occasion get lost or spend hours at a time cowering in fear behind your neighbors bushes, so don’t be alarmed if it seems your package was lost….it’ll get there eventually.
It costs (on average) 1 dollar more to go with reliable quick shipping like UPS or FEDEX , but you can count on Media Mail to save you that dollar and ensure your package will stay in transit as long as possible. In fact from the time you send your package you can probably visit the recipient 3 times before it even arrives. Won’t they be surprised when they receive a package and ponder “I wonder why he didn’t just bring it over last month?” Just bought that new book on eBay? Well Good news it should arrive sometime between now and the release of the paperback version! For all your media transit needs….think MEDIA MAIL!!
DONT FORGET THE GREATS: Rust in Peace

Arguably Megadeth’s best album Rust in Peace is seeing resurgence after a 20th anniversary re release and the presence of two of its tracks on Rock Band. Politics, warfare and the environment are the main topics explored throughout this album, with songs such as “Rust in Peace… Polaris,” which is about intercontinental ballistic missiles, and their effects on the world; “Take No Prisoners,” which is about killing not just the enemy, but one’s own citizens/soldiers; and “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due,” which is a two-part song containing “Holy Wars,” which is in reference to the northern Ireland conflict and “The Punishment Due,” which is about the Marvel Comics character The Punisher, of which Mustaine was a huge fan at the time. “Dawn Patrol” is not about the environment being destroyed by global warming and greenhouse gases, but the life of humans after a nuclear war.
Rust in Peace was one of the first thrash metal albums I ever bought and firmly set me on the Mustaine side of the Megadeth/Metallica battle for souls. Every track on-board is a musical masterpiece enhanced by meaningful lyrics that should shame anyone who’s ever said “LISTEN TO THE WOOOORDS MAAAAAAAAN” about a Lady Gaga song. The biggest difference between a Megadeth album of this caliber and a Mettalica album is that Hetfield seems to be playing a role where as Mustaine appears to be inciting a revolution through his performance. The Real Dethklok

Finally the masters of nerd rock have returned from hiatus with two new singles from their forthcoming album Caravan. The Album is not set to release until next year which makes these two random singles a bit of a surprise. Members had mentioned that when they returned from their personal time after the Snakes and Arrows tour that they would be trying something a bit different than usual. Always known for experimentation (just listen to Roll The Bones for a not so good example of Rap) Rush could be attempting to release an album of purely singles as opposed to a complete 12 song disc. I would have absolutely no problem with this as it is the direction music is headed, not to mention every small release garners the same excitement of a full album, leading to better sales and so on.
